I cannot stress enough how much it hurts me when people take in pets just because they're cute. Rocky was rehabilitated and released back into the wild Halloween 2007. She is very happy and has her own family now. Imagine if you took a great animal like that and made it a pet. You take away it's freedom to be in the wild and have a family. If you're willing to do that then you're pathetic. You are the worst sort of scum and that will remain as long as you feel that way. If they have long term issues them find a professional who can give them proper care. There is no excuse for having them as pets. Rehabilitation is different than making them pets and rehabilitation should only be done by trained professionals. Rocky was rehabilitated (meaning she healed and was released back into the wild).

I write so many replies every day trying to explain that it is not right to take animals out of the wild and try to domesticate them. There are so many indecent humans beings on this earth who think only of themselves. Whenever I ask why they want a raccoon they say it's because they're cute and that isn't even remotely a good reason to get a pet. They have no idea how selfish that is and that the raccoon will be unhappy and they don't even think of their own bodily harm. They sure will once they take a raccoon away from it's family and realize they have razor blade claws. Some of you are such idiots. I sugar coat it too much. SOME OF YOU ARE JUST COMPLETE MORONS! I can't even stand some of the people who write me about some of this stuff. It's just so low of them. I can't even talk about it or I'll get too upset.

Here's the excerpt with some info about Chewy and Rocky so you have more of a background.

"And I would not EVER mix those two species or any other because with a raccoon MANY species would die in less than a minute. I'm certain. Raccoons will attack anything that comes near them, including other raccoons and humans. Rocky was not in any way tame. Trust me. Please don't think they're all cutesy pie. We just formed an understanding that she would have to try to control her lashing out while she was living with me. She spent hours outside everyday where she could play around and that was fine but if she started attacking people inside then she went back outside again because she REALLY DOES ATTACK like other raccoons do in the wild. She was nice until she gained mobility and her instincts kicked in. I was glad because it meant she could go back in the wild like it's supposed to be. They're not pets.

And if you're thinking I'm hypocritical about not mixing species and thinking back on videos of Rocky and my dog then I guess I'll have to defend myself. That is the only exception I have ever made because on the first day of having the raccoon she had to stay in a sling so I could carry her around with me everywhere. I fell asleep on the bed with her in the sling and Chewy somehow got in the room and the door closed on him so he couldn't get out. Chewy jumped on the bed (not seeing Rocky) and laid down and when he woke up the raccoon was curled up to him for warmth. They were petrified of each other but they were both cold so apparently fear doesn't count when you could have warmth instead. Since they got a long and she desperately needed a playmate to get her up and walking again I let them spend time together. It worked and they still get to see each other from time to time. Rocky's completely wild and ever since she started walking she has not 'played with' but 'attacked' everything around her just like all other raccoons so I make Chewy stay far away these days.

Please don't even consider taking them in as pets. They will NEVER be tamed. If Rocky wasn't immobilized then we wouldn't have been able to even let her in the house.
