In 1994, I was a 7th grader who had just started to get his feet wet in the world of jazz and fusion drumming. My middle school music teacher, Debi Eng, and her drummer husband, Frank, turned me on to Vocal Jazz. The first album I listened to? It was called "What's Inside" by the New York Voices. The opening track ("All Blues") woke me up to a whole other world of swingin' that I hadn't heard yet. I was hooked and listened to the album in its entirety - something I've probably done over a hundred times in the years since.
That was my first introduction to Tommy Igoe. Before the Groove Essentials Series, before the Birdland Big Band - it was his brilliant playing with New York Voices that nailed me to a wall. He particularly knocked me out on the track "The Sultan Fainted". (Check that track out if you haven't yet, cats - it's blazin'!) After that, I went out and bought every New York Voices album I could find, and did my best to absorb the tasteful, energetic drumming that Tommy throws down. I've been a fan of his for almost two decades now, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. :D
So, this is a fun Soca/Songo/Samba tune called "New Ground". It's one of Tommy Igoe's contributions to Vic Firth's Educational Play-Along Tracks Series, which is available for FREE on the Vic Firth website. Vic Firth has tons of great educational materials available to drummers/percussionists from nearly any field of study, and I suggest you go check out all the great stuff they have to offer.
To go download a PDF and MP3 of this song (both with and without drums), go to this page: http://www.vicfirth.com/education/dru...
Worth noting: * The best sound is available when played back in 720p HD. * I am aware that I duplicated a few fills here. No big whoop, right? ;)
Hope you enjoy this - more to come! :D
