Pedalsteelpicker, IF I am correct, both times, it was the banjo--Buck Trent had plugged in his banjo to get a guitar-type sound out of it.

I hadn't heard that account. I knew he was unhappy with the musical direction that Earl wanted to pursue and wasn't too pleased with Earl's sons, who struck him as a little too much of the 1960s.

By Dale, do you mean Dale Potter on fiddle? I know that's Tater Tater Tater Tate, as Mr. Monroe sometimes called him, on bass, with Wayne Lewis on guitar and Blake Williams on banjo, so it would be somewhere around 1984-86, in there.

Fred Allen suffered from high blood pressure that kept him off of his radio show for a few weeks at one point, so he was conscious of his health and was careful about it. What a brilliant man he was.
The rhythm guitarist is Earl White, who also played fiddle for them at times. He still plays fiddle each Saturday night for the Grand Ole Opry Square Dancers--the last Opry performer who was a member of the Crook Brothers, the last surviving original members.
