Michael Schlechtriem war bereits mit 13 Jahren Jungstudent an der Musikhochschule Köln. Zu seinen Lehrern gehörten Radu Aldulescu, Boris Pergamenschikow, Gotthard Popp, bei dem er auch sein Studium mit Auszeichnung abschloss, sowie das Amadeus-Quartett.Neben seiner Anstellung im Sinfonieorchester Münster ist er besonders an Kammermusikalischen Herausforderungen interessiert: Dazu gehören verschiedene CD-Aufnahmen (Z. B. "Siddharta" nach H. Hesse für Violoncello und Klavier,"Der Geigenbauer von Venedig",beides Werke von Matthias Bonitz,1996 bezw.2004), Rundfunkaufnahmen wie z.B.sein Debut 1996 in einem Recital am Budapester Rundfunk sowie sein stetes Interesse an zu Unrecht vergessener Musik. Dazu gehören die russischen Erstaufführungen der Cellosonaten von Arnold Bax und Alan Rawsthorne in der Philharmonie St.Petersburg, sein regelmässiges Eintreten für die Musik Erich Wolfgang Korngolds, dessen Cellokonzert er unter Neil Varon mit der Philharmonie Südwestfalen aufführte und auf dessen Gedenkkonzert zum 100. Geburtstag er 1997 in London auftrat,wie auch die Aufführung des Cellokonzertes von Nikolai Miaskowski im Jahre 2000 in Münster.2004 debütierte er in einigen der größten Konzertsälen Japans als Kammermusikpartner der Münsteraner Pianistin Noriko Kitano.Im Jahre 2007 gab das Duo Schlechtriem/Kitano erneut erfolgreich Konzerte in Japan und wird mittlerweile durch die Konzertagentur Nathalie Kouznetzoff/München http://kulturmanagement-kouznetzoff.de/kontakt.html betreut.

Das 1984 gegründete Turina-Quartett setzt sich neben der Pflege des Klassisch-Romantischen Repertoires besonders für vernachlässigte Werke ein.So gab es z.Bspl. im Jahre 2002 die deutsche Erstaufführung des 1931 komponierten,gewaltigen "Quartetto Intimo" von John Foulds.Mit diesem Werk wurde das Turina-Quartett im Juli 2003 von der BBC-London vorgestellt.Es ist weiterhin auf der CD "Der Geigenbauer von Venedig"von Matthias Bonitz zu hören.Seit 1998 spielt es in der folgenden Besetzung:
