Metalage started out, just as any band starts out. Granted it was a step in a more serious direction, it was as you would imagine it. A few kids, powered by music, decide listening isn't enough and choose to make their own. But the progression of this musical collaboration, marks the development and destruction of many relationships, be they friendly or not.The history begins with Josh Vigness, known to most in the Venice area as Lazlo. In the latter half of 2006, Lazlo took part in the collaboration later dubbed Violent Ritual. Originally a three piece, with designations for bass, vocals, and lead guitar, activity was minimal. But pressing on with the project, they decided a rhythm guitarist was a positive investment. Not long after meeting then novice, which was the talent level of the rest of the collaboration, guitarist Anthony Leclerc was asked to join and eagerly accepted.
Although the project had a name and a gathering of beginner musicians, not much was getting done. This could be attributed to Lazlo being labeled bassist about 4 months before acquiring his first bass guitar, the refusal of the vocalist to "vocalize", or the stubbornness of the lead guitarist to allow creative revision to his music. And although Lazlo had not had a bass, he was a beginner guitarist and often sat down to take music seriously with Anthony. They were the only two that seemed to aspire for success or progression with the "band" and the others' dormant nature didn't settle well with them.
In early 2007, Lazlo and Anthony made the decision to break musical ties with the other members and set out to create they're own project. This ultimately led to the dissolving of relationships with the other members and even led to disdain towards the former "Lead" guitarist. But regardless to what happened with former friends, they pressed on, donning the new project Demonic Age.
Looking for dedication atop other vast criteria, they recruited the Death Metal vocalist, and local musician, Cody Hiner. Although the recruitment came with some hesitation, what with the band not wanting to go in a Death Metal direction. But after the idle period that was the Violent Ritual era, Cody's desire to participate was enough to press on.
Unhappy with the band name, Anthony and Lazlo brainstormed other names, among them was Metalage, a spin on AC/DC's 1978 creation, Powerage. When the name became official, without the Cody's consent, the tensions of the two sides surfaced. And the two came to the decision, that the interest of Cody and the duo of Lazlo and Anthony, didn't show a stride in the same direction, and Cody was expelled. But unlike other the other split, the friendship held together and last even to today.
After months of creating music on their own, Anthony and Lazlo were in dire need of a drummer. Near spring of 2007, the two asked drummer Jesse James to join on, and he accecpted after hearing a cover of Paranoid(Originally by Black Sabbath). The trio had only one practice together, and accomplished very little before Jesse resigned due to his busy life style. Another set of months went by and in late 2007, the two made contact with New York native Corey Williams. Corey was asked to join the band after their first practice, during which a cover of the Ramones song Commando was recorded.
Just as things were looking in an upward direction, Corey was discovered moonlighting in another band without the knowledge of Lazlo and Anthony. After confrontation, the differences in musical direction were realized and the two expelled Corey in early 2008, again finding themselves at a road block after losing their most active drummer yet. The garage recordings can still be found on this and many other sites.
Misfortune struck the duo in mid 2008 when guitarist Anthony Leclerc was forced to move to a desolate, small town in Oklahoma. But, over a year later, in the summer of 2009 the band reunited taking the band on full time. Although they're in the all too familiar road block of not having a percussionist, optimism rings loud in within the project and you can look forward to seeing the band live in the upcoming months of 2009.
