For more than forty years, Michigan's Monroe County was served by two independent, nonprofit hospitals, Memorial Hospital of Monroe, founded by Dr. A.W. Karch in September 1922 and Mercy Hospital of Monroe, founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth in November 1929. In July 1972, the two hospitals merged to form Mercy Memorial Hospital System (MMHS).
