First, it is vital to know that if the mother is exposed to organic or elemental mercury the fetus and baby will also be exposed to a high percentage of what the mother receives. Mercury easily passes from the mother, via the placenta, into the fetus. Mercury also passes into breast milk and enters the nursing baby through its mother’s milk. Silver amalgam fillings realease more toxic vapor than any other source of mercury combined.

In 2004, the EPA estimated that 55%, or 1008 tons, of approximately 2000 tons of all elemental mercury used in commerce today in the U.S. is found in amalgam fillings. An additional 34 tons of mercury is added to that total each year by the placement of new amalgam fillings. Apart from being a substantial amount of mercury, what is significant here is that the dental office is the only workplace environment using this substance in an unregulated manner. Dr. Marvin knows what he's talking about.

The ADA was wrong 150 years ago when it said Amalgam Fillings didn't release mercury, and it's just as wrong today when it says that mercury released from amalgams isn't enough to cause health hazards to anyone, except for a very small number of people who are allergic to mercury. What is even more amazing is that some pro-amalgam dentists, in spite of the ADA's admission to the contrary, continue to believe and tell patients that amalgams don't release mercury.
