MAVS FALL TO WICHITA, 3-2 Courtney sets record in Mavs' fifth loss to Thunder INDEPENDENCE, Missouri -- Andrew Courtney set the Missouri Mavericks rookie record for goals in a season with his 20th goal of the season Saturday night at Independence Events Center in the Mavs 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Wichita Thunder. David Simoes added another goal for the Mavericks, but Wichita goaltender Adam Russo stopped 35 of 37 shots by Missouri. Wichita opened up the scoring six minutes into regulation on a power play goal from Matt Summers. The Mavericks responded two and a half minutes later, as the league's third best power play again yielded results when Andrew Courtney buried a wrist shot from the slot. The goal was Courtney's 20th of the season, breaking Nick Sirota's record for goals by a Maverick rookie, set back in 2009-10. Wichita regained the lead with three minutes left in the first period on an even strength goal from Matt Robinson. Missouri outshot Wichita 10-7 in the period. The second period went without incident except for a fight between Brad Good and Dustin Donaghy. Both were assessed five-minute fighting majors as a result. The Mavericks outshot the Thunder 14-9 in the middle frame. Wichita took a 3-1 lead with seven minutes to go in regulation on Robinson's second goal of the game. The Mavericks drew close on a goal from David Simoes. Kris Hogg and Patrick Schafer assisted on the goal. Simoes tally would be the Mavericks last goal of the evening. Wichita goaltender Adam Russo finished the evening stopping 35 of 37 shots by the Mavericks, wrapping up the 3-2 victory for the Thunder. The Mavericks now head to Wichita to wrap up the season series tomorrow evening at INTRUST Bank Arena. The Mavericks then head to Tulsa to face the Tulsa Oilers on Tuesday before returning home on Friday to face the Rapid City Rush. Missouri Mavericks 2012-13 season tickets are on sale now. MAVS FOILED BY RAPIDS IN THE SHOOTOUT, 4-3 Missouri's lead in playoff race shortens
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri -- The Missouri Mavericks fell in a shootout to the Rapid City Rush, 4-3 Tuesday night at Independence Events Center. Goals from Ed McGrane, Kris Hogg and Tristin Llewellyn, two assists from Dale Mahovsky and 36 saves by Charlie Effinger weren't enough as the Mavs gave up ground in the Turner Conference playoff race. The Mavs third place lead is now down to two points over the Rush with 16 games to play.
The Mavericks white hot power play struck four minutes into regulation, as Tristin Llewellyn blasted home a slap shot from the point, giving Missouri an early 1-0 lead. Dale Mahovsky and John-Scott Dickson added assists on the goal. The lead was short-lived as the Thunder got two quick goals from Kelly Czuy and Collin Circelli at the 11:40 and 12:56 marks of the opening period.
Missouri tied the game three minutes into the second period on a goal from Kris Hogg. Mahovsky picked up his second assist of the game on the goal. The Rush were quick to respond, regaining the lead four minutes later on a goal from Konrad Reeder. Ed McGrane tied the game late in the period on a centering feed from Sebastien Thinel with 2:30 left in the middle frame. Thinel and Andrew Courtney were credited with the assists on the goal.
No goals were scored in the third period between the two teams. Overtime went scoreless as well and the two sides headed to a shootout. Tim Boron stopped all five Mavericks shooters and Circelli netted the game winner in the third round, giving Rapid City the 4-3 win.
The Mavericks' third place lead over the Rush now stands at just two points with 16 regular season games remaining.
The Mavericks are back in action this weekend with three games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Mavs hit the road to Dayton to face the Gems in Ohio on Friday before returning home on Saturday night to square off against the Wichita Thunder. Sunday afternoon, the team will head back to Wichita for the back-end of the home-and-home set. Missouri Mavericks 2012-13 season tickets are on sale now. The Mavericks now hit the road to Wichita to wrap up the back end of a home-and-home series with the Thunder tomorrow evening. The Mavericks wore special pink-themed jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness in association with Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Greater Kansas City. The first period went without scores by either team. The Mavericks were unable to convert on two power play opportunities in the period and were outshot 11-9 by the Thunder in the period. Wichita got on the board first with six minutes remaining in the second period on a goal from Dustin Donaghy The Thunder took a 1-0 lead into the locker room heading into the third period. The Thunder doubled their lead five minutes into the third period on a power play goal from Matt Robinson. The Mavericks cut the Wichita lead in half with 10 minutes to go in regulation on a power play goal of their own from Dale Mahovsky. The Thunder responded with a two-on-one goal by Matt Robinson through the legs of Mavs goaltender Charlie Effinger with less than five minutes to go in regulation. MAVERICKS SHUT DOWN BY ARIZONA Mavs lose season series finale to Sundogs, 3-1 INDEPENDENCE, Missouri -- The Missouri Mavericks lost 3-1 to the Arizona Sundogs Friday night at Independence Events Center in front of a sellout crowd of 5,800 fans. It was the 12th sellout for the Mavericks this season. Ed McGrane scored the lone goal for the Mavs and Charlie Effinger was solid in net for the Mavs, stopping 38 of 40 shots. The Mavericks also welcomed their 500,000th fan through the turnstiles in franchise history on Friday. Arizona grabbed an early 1-0 lead on Missouri with a goal from Tyler Butler at the 6:50 mark of the opening period. The Mavs continued to showcase their improved special teams play, as Ed McGrane knotted the score at 1-1 seven and a half minutes later on a power play goal. The period ended in a 1-1 tie, with Arizona outshooting Missouri 11-9 in the period. The Sundogs scored the lone goal in the second period, when former Maverick Nathan O'Nabigon slapped home a loose rebound in the slot, giving the Sundogs the 2-1 lead heading into the final period. Arizona dominated Missouri in shots, outshooting Missouri 16-9 in the period. The Mavs were unable to solve Arizona goaltender Mike Spillane in the final period and allowed an empty net goal in the final minute of regulation, sealing the 3-1 victory for the Sundogs. Mavs goaltender Charlie Effinger finished the night with 38 saves on 40 shots by the Sundogs. The Mavs close out their season series with Arizona with a 5-1-0 record against the Sundogs and now stand at 5-2-1 all-time against them. The Mavericks return to action on home ice Saturday night, as they face off against the rival Wichita Thunder. On Sunday, the Mavs hit the road to wrap up the back end of a home-and-home set with the Thunder at Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita. MAVS RALLY PAST RUSH IN OT, 2-1 Simoes comes up big in the extra frame INDEPENDENCE, Missouri -- David Simoes was the hero for the Missouri Mavericks Tuesday night at Independence Events Center, scoring the game-winning goal at the 1:22 mark of overtime in the Mavs 2-1 victory over the Rapid City Rush. Ed McGrane tied the game early in the third period and Charlie Effinger stopped 24 of 25 shots by the Rush on the evening. The Mavericks couldn't capitalize on two power play opportunities in the first period and entered the first intermission in a scoreless tie with Rapid City. The Mavs outshot the Rush, 13-9 in the period. The first period was just the sixth scoreless period for the Mavercks this season. Rapid City got on the board with five minutes to go in the second period on a 5-on-3 power play goal from Collin Circelli. The Mavs failed to score in the period and headed into the final period down by a goal. The Mavs again dominated the shot total, outshooting the Rush 17-10 in the period and were outshooting them 29-19 in the game after the final intermission. Ed McGrane knotted the score at 1-1 with a slap shot from the left point at the 4:11 mark of the third period. The goal was unassisted. Regulation ended in a tie and the game headed to overtime. David Simoes became the hero at the 1:22 mark of overtime, rocketing a slap shot from the point past Rapid City goaltender Tim Boron to capture the victory for Missouri. The goal was Simoes first as a Maverick. Charlie Effinger stopped 24 of 25 shots by the Rush in the game and the Mavs went zero-for-three with man advantages on the evening. The Mavericks now head to South Dakota for two games this Thursday and Friday against the Rush at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center before returning home next weekend for games against the Arizona Sundogs on Friday and Wichita Thunder on Saturday.
