@H1pnot The greatest part of Gondor's armies doesn't come from Minas Tirith, but from the Fiefs: tens of thousands were serving the lords there. Of the Free Peoples, there was no doubt that Gondor was the strongest bastion: if it fell, Rohan and the lands behind it would also fall very soon.

@DavrosTheGreatHealer The Hobbit was accepted as a childs book, not LOTR. And Tolkien rewrote everything over and over again, so it's not just a childish character. He was presented in a way that fitted Bombadils character.
