'Remembering Ali'- Favorite Video#1-Ali Farka Toure (October 31, 1939 -- March 7, 2006) was a Malian singer and guitarist, and one of the African continent's most internationally renowned musicians who cared very deeply about fighting poverty and the plight of his fellow countryman, unfortunately because he had no other choice in this matter. His music is widely regarded as representing a point of intersection of traditional Malian music and its North American cousin, the blues. He was born in 1939 in the village of Kanau, on the banks of the Niger River in the northwestern Malian region of Tombouctou. His family moved to the nearby village of Niafunké when he was still an infant. He was the tenth son of his mother but the only one to survive past infancy. "The name I was given was Ali Ibrahim, but it's a custom in Africa to give a child a strange nickname if you have had other children who have died", Touré was quoted as saying in a biography on his Record Label, World Circuit Records. His nickname, "Farka", chosen by his parents, means "donkey", an animal admired for its tenacity and stubbornness: "Let me make one thing clear. I'm the donkey that nobody humps on!" -Wikipedia.
Favorite Video#2-"Diaraby"-So what did Ali look and act like? Here he is in a video from 1994 playing his most popular riff line. Firm, proud and very resolute in his appearance and totally committed to his ideals and goals and going forward with them.
"In 2004 Touré became mayor of Niafunké and spent his own money grading the roads, putting in sewer canals and fueling a generator that provided the impoverished town with electricity. -Wikipedia.
I can even imagine this guy going so far as to operate the bulldozer or backhoe, doing whatever it took to get this project done as quickly as possible to improve the quality of life in his village.
Favorite Video# 3-Ali's friend, bandmate and fellow countryman, Toumani Diabate, lead kora, riffs like crazy in this song, along with his fellow musician, Ballake Sissoko on rythm kora, the song here is called 'Bi Lambam'. The kora is the ancient African harp/lute which I guess sounds most like the folk instument, the hammered dulcimer from our country, but looks and is played very differently. Also listen for the bass in this song, understated but equally brilliant in it's beauty here. Ali passed away in 2006 after a long battle with bone cancer. This type of cancer is unfortunately very difficult, it brings you down slowly but steadily and most unfortunately often with a great deal of pain. t really makes me wonder, after all the suffering he went through in his early life and all the good he accomplished later on, why he had to get this and once again be subjected to so much more suffering. I only wish I knew the answer to that one because I really want to know it!
Favorite Video# 4-Cat Stevens "On the Road To Find Out"

About Me:
Country:
United States
Interests:
Plz see my comments which mention my faved videos for these!
Movies:
Featured Video: Coven of the Cat "I will return when springs first shadows trail" Epitaph-Dr. Frederick Santee, 1906-1980. With Halloween just around the corner, it's time to check out this interesting tale of terror and intrigue from the "Haunted" series on Animal Planet. This episode deals with the haunting of a house that a young couple has just moved into and attempts to answer the question, Can spirits sometimes be beings other than humans?...chillingly well done! Future Video to be Featured: (Faves list) Church at Rocky Peak. I talk about the presence of spirits, both evil and benevolent that I have personally run into while hiking in the Santa Susana mountains near Rocky Peak Church and I attempt to answer the question are some places haunted and inherently evil because of the traumatic events that have occurred there? Watch the Manson doc, part 2, as told by Linda Kasabian in my faves to get a feel for this and the turbulent history of this particular area. Movie Highlite: (Faves List) The music of Cat Stevens really shines in these couple of offbeat sleeper films from the hippie era genre that few remember anymore, "Trouble" from the film 'Harold and Maude' and "But I Might Die Tonight" from the film 'Deep End'.
