United Nations, New York, 15 January 2010 - Mass graves are being dug up to bury the tens of thousands of dead as many people try to leave the city over cracked and debri covered roads.

Seventy-two hours after a massive earthquake struck Haitis capital Port-au-Price and neighbouring areas, mass graves are being dug up in the outskirts of the city to bury the dead, which could reach up to a hundred thousand.

The Minister of Public Health said that managing the bodies is one of the top health priorities, to prevent epidemics, and due to the enormous scale of the task bodies are being piled into heaps and buried together in nameless graves.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Dr. Alex Larsen, Minister of Public Health:
"The urgent intervention here is to manage the bodies. We have to get them out, and sanitize the area, disinfect it. And we have to prevent epidemics."

Haitis Minister of Civil Protection said the government expects more than 50,000 dead, closer to 100,000. He says 750,000 may be homeless, and 250,000 wounded. The government said yesterday they had already buried more than 7,000 people.

SOUNDBITE (Creole) Dieufort de Lorge, Minister of Civil Protection:
"There are more than 50,000 dead. We believe there are between 750,000 and a million homeless, and about 250,000 wounded."

Meanwhile, scores of people started leaving the city in packed vehicles in a massive exodus away from the destruction of Port-au-Prince, sometimes traversing over often cracked and barely passable roads.

United Nations, New York, 16 January 2010: Food distribution continued today (16 January) in the devastated Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, four days after a massive earthquake killed thousands, left scores homeless and created a dire humanitarian situation.

In contrast to the chaos witnessed at other points of distribution, this operation handled by Bolivian peacekeepers who were doling out their own food rations appeared to go smoothly.

People waited patiently in long lines for plates of rice and beans, a welcome respite to the high energy biscuits and meals-ready-to-eat distributed elsewhere.

The success of the operation highlighted the need for good security at distribution points, with soldiers on hand to guard the supplies.

SOUNDBITE (English) Lt. Hendrick Jose Tavarez, Bolivian Peacekeeper:
"We have about seven or eight of these trucks for giving food in all the city. In this moment we are giving food and water; and this if for maybe 500 or 1000 persons."

The World Food Programme (WFP), meanwhile, is gearing up to distribute ready-to-eat food rations to 2 million people as most people have no access to cooking facilities. In order to help it achieve that goal, the UN food agency is appealing to its donor governments to offer excess stocks of ready-to-eat meals for use in the Haiti emergency. WFP will also try to establish food kitchens in Port-au-Prince to provide prepared foods to the hungry.

Tuesday's 7.0 magnitude earthquake is said to have affected one-third of Haiti's 9-million strong population. Many of the people in the hard-hit capital, Port-au-Prince, do not have access to food, water, shelter and electricity.

ManuchehrR, pay no attention to comments posted by those like arnoldstwin36. Whoever that is there is bigotry involved in the comment posted by that user. Everybody else is posting their replies to Pat Robertson on YouTube because of the odious message he commented in his CBN network. We are all hurt by the message he carried out on television. It's not the first time he did this. Remember Hurricane Katrina?
