This is our pitch: MANFRED - One Man's War With Destiny
MANFRED is set amongst the impossibly brave pilots of the First World War and is a film that proves it is possible to carve out your own destiny, regardless of the hand that fate dealt you.
Manfred von Richthofen is a young and very keen Cavalry Officer, born into a family that has always served in the Cavalry. However, with the advent of the First World War, he soon discovers that machine guns, trenches and horses just don't mix. Embracing the emergent technology of powered flight and with flying machines that are truly in their infancy, Manfred escapes the family tradition and takes to the air in an attempt to find his own voice, carve out his own destiny and make his own impression on the world. And what an impression he makes.
"MANFRED" is an Action/Adventure/Romance and follows the true story of Manfred Von Richthofen, the legendary Red Baron of the First World War. It is a multi-layered character based script and although 40% of the film involves period planes in flight with 9 dogfights and an action-packed cavalry ambush sequence within the first 10 minutes, this is far more than just another war film.
Just below the surface lie three complex sub-texts, namely a classic hero's journey as Manfred fights to find his own destiny; a buddy-buddy film as his sense of fun and charisma is reflected in the comradeship with his fellow pilots (including his younger brother) and a love story highlighted by the poignancy of his love affair with a mystery woman.
Instead of the enemy that Manfred fights being the young men of the opposing side, Manfred wages war against the life that he was born into - as Manfred says, the war is irrelevant, the real enemy lies within us all.
The fact that Manfred was a German is as irrelevant to the film as the fact that Maximus was a Spaniard in GLADIATOR and because of this, we are able to keep the film allegorical. We therefore avoid the explicit nationalities of the warring factions, instead describing the two sides as always "us" and "them" and never "The Germans" and "The Allies".
To further aid in the appeal of this film, all the youth of the film (regardless of nationalities) are written as modern-day characters whereas the elder generations (including the commanding officers, parents, politicians and Head of State) are all written as characters from the time-period 1914-18.
The First World War is sometimes referred to as a war of Lions led by Donkeys and so the heroes of this film are all youth (regardless of nationality) - the Lions, and the villains are the elder generations - the Donkeys.
Modern wars are fought and won by securing air supremacy, a concept utterly unknown at the start of the First World War. The flying machines used to carry out these early duels were often nothing more than fragile, glorified death-traps; canvas covered wooden boxes held together with wires and a prayer. Never just a traditional war film, this is a film about a man who chooses to fight his own very personal battle to find his own identity and to make his own impact on the world - a very real theme that is universally identifiable to all.
