Maleficent: performance-lead industrial rock
Appearances can be deceptive as Maleficents female vocalist Miss Martini illustrates: People think Im all image and nothing else so theyre surprised when they realise I can deliver the same amount of aggression on stage as any man.
The glamorous Italian came to London to study at the Royal Ballet School and ended up forming the band with poet Mortimer Cain and guitarist/programmer Dr Vincent M Sickx in 2006. Her idea was to create a rock band with as much emphasis on performance as on the music itself.
Maleficent mix sexy industrial with dark metal on record but live, they bring in Miss Martinis theatrical background. She explains: I always dreamed about being able to perform on stage with the music that I loved and through Maleficent Im able to make my dream become a reality.
I wanted to use the discipline of ballet and mix it with a more modern way of using my body, she adds and recently the singer has been experimenting with bondage as part of the live show. This involves her being suspended several feet above the stage by ropes it might look simple but it has taken months of training to perfect. We improvise a lot live depending on the size of the venue but I always have a concept in mind, Miss Martini says.
Shes performed across Europe, including Greece, Finland, Holland and Italy and has high hopes for the band. I want us to play all over the world, she smiles. Were constantly growing and developing our live shows I dont think well ever be able to say: This is as far as we can go because I believe there are no boundaries in performance.
Fellow vocalist Mortimer Cain adds: Were stuck in transition between the underground and popular culture but we will break through.
Maleficent released their self-financed EP Demize last year and have recently put out a video for their second single Where The Wild Roses Grow. It was shot on location at the magnificent Villa Scarfantoni near Florence in Italy and can be found on their myspace site.
The band have recently been featured in Metal Hammer, Terrorizer, Bizarre and Skin Two. Theyre currently working on material for their debut album and about to embark on a European tour.
