Tamils have countered with the claim that Heladiva ('Sri Lanka') does not belong to the Sinhelas (Hela) alone and that Tamils have been on the Island for thousands of years, that there was a Tamil kingdom in the north for three hundred years.
But, how valid are these Tamil claims?

The Tamil kingdom in the north was actually a sub-kingdom under the King of Kandy to whom the Tamil sub-king paid regular tribute. In any case, both before and after these supposed 300 years it was a Sinhela (Hela) kingdom, and conquest during a brief period in history can hardly be a basis for a permanent ownership.

If it were, the Portuguese and the Dutch would also have claims for the Western littoral strip of the Heladiva ('Sri Lanka'), and the British for the whole country! In fact, the world map would be very different today. To begin with, the Roman conquest of much of Britain continued for over 500 years, and so it should, according to the Tamil theorists, be part of Italy today. The Mongols occupied much of the whole of Europe, which should therefore be a Mongolian country..!

Above all, the law of national sovereignty has a simple principle which demolishes the sort of mischievous inventions which Tamils have engaged in during the past fifty years. The principle has two aspects. Stated simply, the law states that there is ONLY ONE nation of its kind in the world. Thus there is only one English nation in the world and wherever they are, English people belong to the same nation. Again, there is only one French nation in the world, one German nation etc.

The corollary of this principle is that each nation has ONLY ONE country, which is its motherland. Thus, for example, the English nation has only one country (England), the French nation has only one country (France), the German nation has only one country (Germany) etc. The ultimate collapse of the imperial ethic was due to - and the principle on which the Second World War was fought was - the direct or implicit recognition of this law, with each imperial nation ultimately retreating back to within the confines of its own country. Imperialism, in other words, is definable as moving beyond a nations own boundaries. Any nation, then, which goes into the country of another nation is committing aggression and invasion - and such a situation is intolerable.

The relevance of this principle to the Heladiva ('Sri Lankan') context is that it summarily dismisses all Tamil claims out of hand.

Given that there can be only one Tamil nation, a Tamil wherever he/she is in the world belongs to that nation.
The Tamil nation already has its own country, which is the massive south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Twice the size of Heladiva ('Sri Lanka'), it is the motherland of the teeming Tamil nation of 57 millions. It is, therefore, not possible to make a claim for another "Tamil country" in Heladiva ('Sri Lanka').

On the one nation - one country principle, both the idea that there is a second Tamil nation in Heladiva ('Sri Lanka') and that there should be a second Tamil country in the Island to house it are, therefore, wholly unacceptable and untenable theses.

The claim, then, for a second Tamil country in the north of Heladiva ('Sri Lanka') on the basis that there was a Tamil kingdom there for three hundred years becomes as irrelevant, absurd and preposterous as (for example) any claims for a second Italian country in England on the basis of the 500-plus years Roman kingdom there.

In any case, a Tamil kingdom, if it existed in the north of the Island, as claimed by Tamil propagandists, could only have existed BY INVASION.
