I first gained intrest in drums when I was 7 years old (Summer of 1996.) I didn't have a set of my own until I was 12 years old. A friend of mine had a drum set. I was never intrested in it, until he put a pair of drumsticks in my hand and I sat in front of his drum set for the first time. Right away, I knew I had found my nich in life, and the one thing I would untimately accel at... music. In the yeas before I'd gotten my own drum set, I had a pair of drumsticks, and just played on every surface I could. I grew up listening to mainstream 90's rock (Third Eye Blind, The Verve Pipe, Eve 6, ect.) In September of 1999, a friend of mine had come back from a trip to Florida with a CD in his hand and told me I should listen to it. He put it in my CD player, and my life changed. It was the, "Act of Depression" album from Underoath. I knew right away what kind of drummer I wanted to be. I'd discovered metal, but I had also discovered my favorite band, who still is to this day. Aaron Gillespie set the bar for me for the first time. On December 7th, 2000, I got my first drum set for my birthday. It was nothing special at all as far as brand goes (Rhythm Art Standard 5 Piece), but it was all I needed to get to where I am today. In 2004, Underoath released, "They're Only Chasing Safety". When I first heard it, I didn't understand. "Why do they sound this way? Why does Dallas' scream sound so different?" Who is this new singer?" Few of several questions that began filling my mind... so I got on a computer at school and did some research. I discovered that they had replaced Dallas Taylor with Spencer Chamberlain, but I was shocked to read that Gillespie was doing the clean vocals WHILE playing drums. This would be the 2nd time he had set the bar for me. If he was my main source of inspiration, I had to do what he could do, sing and play drums simultaneously. After 2 years, I'd figured it out. In 2002 however, a close friend of mine, Alex Veatch, got me intrested in acoustic guitar. He taught me the basics, as far as major chords and easy riffs go. My mom had a guitar, which I began playing more then she ever did. It eventually became mine. I began using the basics Alex taught me, and started teaching myself everything else. I taught myself to sing and play a year later. Today, I play on a Pearl "Chad Smith" Signature Limited Edition set. I plan on buying an Aaron Gillespie Signature Truth drum set eventually, but for now, I'm happy with what I have and play it everyday.
