Hi to all from Macedonia, Greece. Please click the link above and take a look at the list of 350 academics, for the main part historians, archaeologists and Classicists teaching at the most renowned universities in the world - including the likes of Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton, Stanford, Vassar, College de France and hundreds of others in the United States and Europe - that sent a letter to Barack Obama for the TRUTH ABOUT MACEDONIA, dismissing FYROM's claims on Macedonia by stating the obvious truth:
MACEDONIA, THEREFORE GREECE!
MACEDONIAN, THEREFORE GREEK!
But how did all started? Why international scholarship decided to take place in a name dispute? Exactly because they are scholars, serving the historical truth and not any kind of politicians or diplomats who of course carry hidden or even obvious agendas! Briefly, that is what is going on:
Macedonia is the biggest and most populous region of Greece, coincides 90% with the ancient kingdom of Macedon, the birthplace of Macedonians, an ancient Greek tribe, Alexander the Great being the most famous Macedonian.
FYROM is the UN reference for the
FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC of MACEDONIA, a modern (1991) Slavic/Albanian state at the north of Macedonia, coincides 10% with the ancient kingdom of Macedon, the rest being ancient Paionia, an enemy of Macedon.
FYROMians stole and use a Greek name ("Macedonia") deliberately misleading global community claiming Macedonia was not Greek and Macedonians were not Greeks, so they, FYROMians -who are mostly of Bulgarian and Albanian origin- are the "real" Macedonians, since they live in a land they like to call "Macedonia"!!! Are they honest? Of course not!! Lets just see how REAL Macedonians identified themselves:
Alexander I of Macedon, king of Macedon from 498 BCE to 454 BCE:
"Men of Athens... In truth I would not tell it to you if I did not care so much for all Greece; I myself am by ancient descent a Greek, and I would not willingly see Greece change her freedom for slavery."
(From the speech of Alexander I of Macedon when he was admitted to the Olympic games, Herodotus, "Histories", 9.45)
Alexander the Great, addressing the dead Greeks of the Battle of Chaeronea:
"Holy shadows of the dead, Im not to blame for your cruel and bitter fate, but the accursed rivalry which brought sister nations and brother people, to fight one another. I do not feel happy for this victory of mine. On the contrary, I would be glad, brothers, if I had all of you standing here next to me, since we are united by the same language, the same blood and the same visions."
(Historiae Alexandri Magni, 6.3.11, by Roman historian Quintus Curtius Rufus)
Alexander the Great, king of Macedon, 356 BCE - 323 BCE:
"Your ancestors came to Macedonia and the rest of Greece and did us great harm, though we had done them no prior injury. I have been appointed leader of the Greeks."
(Alexander's letter to Persian king Darius in response to a truce plea, as quoted in "Anabasis Alexandri" by Roman historian Arrian, Book II, 14, 4)
Alexander the Great, king of Macedon, 356 BCE - 323 BCE:
"Now you fear punishment and beg for your lives, so I will let you free, if not for any other reason so that you can see the difference between a Greek king and a barbarian tyrant."
(Kallisthenes, Historia Alexandri Magni, 1.37.9-13)
Alexander the Great, king of Macedon, 356 BCE - 323 BCE:
"There are Greek troops, to be sure, in Persian service — but how different is their cause from ours! They will be fighting for pay — and not much of at that; we, on the contrary, shall fight for Greece, and our hearts will be in it."
(Addressing his troops prior to the Battle of Issus, as quoted in Anabasis Alexandri by Roman historian Arrian, Book II, 7)

Here are just a few quotes on the Greekness of Macedonia by more scholars; unfortunately youtube space is limited so I can't post thousands of them...: -------------------------------------------------- George Cawkwell, Emeritus Fellow, University College, Oxford: "The Macedonians were Greeks." ("Philip of Macedon", Faber & Faber, London, 1978) ---------------------------------------------- Otto Hoffmann, German linguist: "Whoever does not consider the Macedonians as Greeks must also conclude that by the 6th and 5th centuries BC the Macedonians had completely given up the original names of their nation - without any need to do so - and taken Greek names in order to demonstrate their admiration for Greek civilisation. I think it not worth the trouble to demolish such a notion; for any hypothesis of historical linguists which is put forward without taking into account the actual life of a people, is condemned as it were out of its own mouth."("Die Makedonen, Ihre Sprache und Ihr Volkstum", Göttingen) --------------------------------------------------- David George Hogarth, English archaeologist and scholar:"From Alexander I, who rode to the Athenian pickets the night before Plataea and proclaimed himself to the generals their friend and a Greek, down to Amyntas, father of Philip, who joined forces with Lacedaemon in 382, the kings of Macedon bid for Greek support by being more Greek than the Greeks."("Philip and Alexander of Macedon", pp.9-10) ------------------------------------------ Francois Chamoux, French historian:"Such a glorious ancestry was in the eyes of Greeks the hallmark of the Greek persona of the king of Macedon, who could, on the other hand, rely on fidelity of the people from which he had sprung. The Greek cities did not feel that they were allying with a barbarian, since for generations the Macedonian dynasty had been allowed, as Greeks, to take part in the Olympic Games."("Hellenistic Civilization", Blackwell Publishing Professional, 2002, p.8, 9) -------------------------------------------------- Ulrich Wilcken, German historian:"Macedonians were a Greek race and akin to the Dorians."("Alexander the Great", p. 22) -------------------------------------------------- W. J. Woodhouse, Australian historian:"This was Macedonia in the strict sense, the land where settled immigrants of Greek stock later to be called Macedonians."("The tutorial history of Greece, to 323 B.C", p.216, University Tutorial Press) -------------------------------------------------- Ian Worthington, English historian and archaeologist:"... not much need to be said about the Greekness of ancient Macedonia: it is undeniable."("Philip II of Macedon", Yale University, 2008)
