OVERVIEW of "Hydrogen Fates" Anime
The story technically begins in Central Japan, with an orphaned young woman working in a popular tea shop. The owner - her mentor of several happy years - dies unexpectantly, leaving the unique tea shop to his estranged son and daughter. They keep the shop in operation as their father's Will dictates, but make many financially motivated changes to it, including cutting more than half of the considerable, existing Staff. Still in mourning and unable to keep her thoughts to herself, the protagonist earns herself Notice, but, as Fate has it, meets HIM on the last day before she leaves... The man she will love until she dies and who will always die loving her...

Yet, this story really started years in the future, with a bitter old man who sent his true love to her death many years before. Regret - and a selfish desire for his own personal glory and having a sort of ironic revenge - drives him to seek out a crazed R&D scientist who needs funding for the final stage of an unbelievable test project... Seperating the very essence of any test subject from himself and sending him back, into his past self. The catch is, not only will the subject risk his life to attempt the shift of his spirit through relative time, but must also commit to sacrificing it beforehand, giving up both his body and soul to the fate dictated by the massively destructive exocution of the time/soul-sending experiment. And there are others who will consider - even be glad - to go before him. Even the "good doctor" wants to go back...

Moving over to the U.S. and coming into the 'modern day'(our relative future*), the story picks up with an awkward, anti-social young "lady" who can't seem to find a direction or a fixed point in her life to focus on - family, friend or personal interest - even though she is attending College. Then a British student transfers into her school, and a serious crush on him grounds her down and drives her to really apply herself. He finds himself inexplicably drawn to this "strange flower", but her cute shyness and fawning eagerness to spend time with and please him, along with her silently suffering possessiveness and brooding jealousy over and toward him, win his fond favor and begin to tug at the deepest, softest, strongest fibers of his heart. And then, on their Spring Break, while they are visiting a memorial shrine built in the desolate outskirts of a Japanese City destroyed years before in an infamously destructive terrorist act, something unexpected, even unthinkable, happens... Her mind becomes joined to the spirit of a victim of the past bombing.

What follows is the struggle of the two minds - and seemingly diametrically opposed personalities - as 'the carried' tries to take over 'the carrier', the "Hostess" desperately trying to purge herself of the incomprehensible - and certainly unwanted - force that seemingly possesses her. From shocked disbelief and denial, through fear and even terror, a stay in a phychiatric institution becomes a simple existance "alone", "on the outside", with only the invasive feelings, thoughts - and even actions - of the one into the so-called "life" of the other. Help comes from a hypno-therapist and a journalist, as "the carrier" tries to come to grips with the true nature of her mind's "condition". And desperately seeks the answers "her" restless spirit requires to "let go", of the past and present, which have been coming into her minds-eye in unguarded waking moments and constantly in the defenseless depths of her increasingly fleeting REM cycles. Can there be any understanding, any true sharing? A bearable coexistance of give and take? Even a little..."happiness"?

Time eventually yields the discovery of the "Soul-Sending Project", and love drives, both of them, to try the impossible...
