Shekeres by MJShekere

MJShekere is a group based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Joe Serrano in collaboration with an incredible group of artisans composed by Mayra Serrano, Rita Meléndez, Jorge Meléndez and other contributors have created shekeres for all the Orishas (Santos) and professional musicians.
This instrument of African origin is made out of a dried gourd covered by a woven net with colorful beads or shells and is used as a percussion instrument. With an amazing sound, reminiscent of our heritage and rooted in Old World African music with new traditions in the Yoruba religion, it is highly respected and holds an important role in certain traditional forms of music, particularly Afro Cuban music.
