The Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit research and education center. It was founded in 1982 by famed treasure-hunter Mel Fisher and a group of his associates. The MFMHS is focused on maritime heritage, especially as it is found through the archaeology of shipwrecks. Its overarching goal is to teach the public about the maritime past. The organization has been long been a leader in the study of Spanish Colonial and Transatlantic Slave Trade subjects. The MFMHS Key West, Florida facility houses collections from the wrecks of the Spanish galleons Nuestra Señora de Atocha and Santa Margarita of 1622, the London-based slave ship Henrietta Marie of 1700, and a 16th century vessel known as the St. Johns Bahamas Wreck. The MFMHS also maintains the Schimmel Archives, home to a large collection of maps, prints and documents relating to the maritime heritage of the greater Caribbean area. The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum is visited by nearly 200,000 people annually. In 2009, the MFMHS opened the Key West Turtle Museum, which tells the unusual story of the local turtle fishing industry.
