Colorful race of self-made beds draws thousands of spectators. The "fast, crazy and original" race is held annually in a city not far from Berlin.

STORY:
They were not racing at Formula-1 speeds but competitors in a German race of self-made beds still thrilled onlookers. The race was held this Sunday, May 11 in Fredersdorf, located near Berlin. Racers dressed up as everything from storks, bunnies, and chickens. Over five thousand spectators came to watch these colorfully made beds race. The only criteria necessary to race were that beds had to be "fast, crazy and original."

"I'm happy that so many people showed up."
This is twentieth year this race has been held.

[Frank Blume]:
"There are more than 20 beds competing. As you can see, lots of people have come and the weather is fantastic...What more do you want?"

[Gerd Herwig, Onlooker]:
"It's a lot of fun every year with lots of new ideas. The weather is great too, a perfectly relaxing day."

Fredersdorf is located just southeast of the German capital Berlin. Each year the race draws thousands of onlookers to the so called "Bettenrennen". A jury makes sure that all beds cross the finish line within nine minutes. Each creation is evaluated based on its "craziness and originality". Spectators enjoy a fun day out with their families and clearly don't mind too much who the official winner is.
