I was a conductor in New York, here we have a lot of grades and it has a lot of turns. So we use a lot of dynamic opposed to air breaking. My math was our basic "Rule of thumb" kind, quick and dirty but it always errs on the long side, not bringing you up short. Of course ConRail wasn't exactly the smartest outfit I ever worked for :P
