Till the end of my days, Oh Lord, I will bless Your Name, sing Your praise, give You thanks all my days...
About Me:
Some people may watch EWTN on TV. Some may record the shows and share them with friends. Many people don't have EWTN though. Either they don't have cable (by choice or lack of money) or their cable company doesn't offer it in some cases. What's more, you're watching videos in a linear fashion. Unless you record them (like I do) it's hard to pick out just the right video to help a certain person at a certain time. EWTN runs a free stream on their website. Unless you're VERY technically savy, it's not possible to record (or schedule recording) of that.
I propose EWTN should do one of the following:
1) Open their own channel (the Vatican did) and share select videos they have the copyright to on an experimental basis. They could watch revenue and see if it was affected. If it goes well, keep adding more. My guess is the response and love would be overwhelming. Commercials could be included in the videos as well as links to buy them. With this option they'd have more control and they could always cut back if revenues were affected. This would also be a very good thing for Catholic bloggers who could embed the videos. It would also be a GREAT service to those of us trying to evangelize online. This would also have the benefit of distribution without cost of bandwidth.
2) Give us a low-quality version of select videos on an experimental basis (that we can distribute non-commercially)...with ads and a message to buy the video...that can be distributed openly online in a non-commercial manner. Those who had the money to buy it to begin with won't settle for this as a replacement. For those who either wouldn't or couldn't have bought it, this would still allow the benefit of learning the teachings.
3) Allow select shows to be distributed non-commercially on the internet.
When people search youtube for "Catholic" you want them to find mostly anti-Catholic propaganda? Or would it be better for them to find people like Mother Angelica, Scott Hahn, Marcus Grodi, Fr. Groeschel, Fr. Corapi, etc. There is a lot of good Catholic people who make videos on youtube. It's hard to compete though with well-made videos by the experts.
I know videos take money to produce. But how much revenue are they really losing with a few views on youtube, compared with the benefits? What's the economic value of one more converted soul? Imagine the possible things each new person could do for the Church? Doesn't that cancel out $19.95 in some cases? My youtube inbox is full of messages from people who were helped by these videos, a few people possibly converted.
When you share a video on Youtube, other blogs can post it, people can e-mail the link to their friends....they can always refer back to the videos they think might help others. It's quick and easy to search for videos on a certain topic when you're faced with a situation. There's people who see things on Youtube, even non-Catholics, who never would have seen (or bought) them on EWTN. Even some Catholics I talked with online don't know the true beauty of EWTN. I used the videos on a regular basis to help people in various chatrooms I'm in, mostly existing Catholics with questions.
For my part, I'll continue to share with family and friends, just not on Youtube I guess.
