There is no place like home. For me that is Louisiana - a state that is full of a wonderful mix of people and culture. The people here are different from everywhere else in the world; we know we've got something and it's sometimes hard to put our finger on it. While the regions of Louisiana have their own distinct qualities, what we all have in common is music. Whether its live brass band music in New Orleans, Zydeco and Fais Do Do music in Acadiana, if were singing the blues, tapping our foot to some jazz, or swaying to gospel. We all connect with the music.

We're lucky to be able to go out to the bars, clubs and other music venues to hear these people play; we should all want to preserve this great culture we have which allows us to go out and do these things on a regular basis. Is there any other place in the world where you can go out and hear indigenous music?

Part of preserving our heritage and our culture is to make sure that those who contribute to it - our musicians, DJs, artists and performers, bartenders, emcees, bar/club staff and band crew - are around for a long time. What can we do to ensure this? We can make sure that the places where they spend six to eight hours a day working is not filled with smoke. We can start by supporting smoke-free shows, supporting smoke-free policies which protects everyone from the dangers of secondhand smoke. We can support live music, support the musicians, support all cultural workers and all those who contribute to the cultural economy of Louisiana. Being an advocate for smoke-free public places is a great place to start.
