In Turkey, the scarf is not an issue of free speech, religious freedom or culture. Turkey is one of the most stable countries in the middle east, due to its secular government. As with Iraq, Afghanistan & Lebanon- Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia are vying to attain positions of power & influence in Turkey. They support & fund the islamist party & women wearing the scarf "muslim style."
The scarf is used as a political symbol against democracy & the west by sly fundamentalists who know if women wearing scarves cry "free speech" & "religious freedom," western countries will run to their aid & unknowingly support the cause of islamists who want to expand their sphere of influence & sharia law. It's an insidious process by which sharia strictures are first made socially acceptable.
It's a game of chess the islamists play using the west's rules & values. Turks know this. That's why women wearing scarves Turkish style participated in the mass protests for secularism. Don't be fooled.
