WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING THE LOAFERS' 2006 RELEASE <<quicksand>>:
MIKE SCHILLER (popmatters.com): "Wow! This may be it—this may be the one that puts them back on track toward some serious national recognition... The choice of songs is even more off the beaten path than the typical Penny Loafers disc, the production has seen another bump in quality...and the soloists do a fabulous job of filing in for their mostly alt-rock counterparts. Both Snow Patrol songs...sound fantastic, with soloists who mercifully eschew Gary Lightbody's distracting vocal tics, the over-the-top production on Beck's 'Girl' is perfect, and somehow, they even make Coldplay's rather dreary 'Swallowed in the Sea' sound somewhat appealing... It's cleanly tuned, smoothly polished, and unflinchingly pleasant. With this sort of trajectory, the next Penny Loafers album could well be a classic."
JOEY CAMPAGNA (acappellu.com): "They're sort of the Jesus Christ of a cappella groups... 'Swallowed in the Sea' is very, very well mastered. The arrangement is good... The soloist is just dynamite. He is just absolutely fantastic... Sam Cohn arranged this piece, he soloed it, and he percusses it, which is just wild. He does a great job—I really like it... What a bunch of talented kids those Loafers are!"
ANNA CREECH (blogcritics.com): "Once again, I was both surprised and pleased by how much I enjoy their versions of modern pop radio songs I never would listen to in their original incarnations. 'Swallowed in the Sea' is a prime example... Sam Cohn's a cappella arrangement and performance as lead vocal has made me think I should try [Coldplay] again... All of the songs on Quicksand are arranged close to the originals, as far as I can tell... The group has over a dozen arrangers represented on this album, and despite that they have kept the quality consistent... Even so, the quality of the recording is still impressive. The Penny Loafers have followed up Side A with another fine collection of a cappella tunes."
BRIAN IBBOTT (coverville.com): "What I really like about this is that it... takes a lesser known song sung by Aimee Mann...and mixes it up a little bit. The lead vocalist sounds very much like Aimee Mann, but the phrasing and the arrangement...is what makes this song even more unique."
PRIMARILY A CAPPELLA (singers.com): "Quicksand has 14 rich, beautifully-arranged covers ...Maya Varthi has a wonderful lead on Aimee Mann's 'Humpty Dumpty,' and there's a pair of hot covers of Kelly Clarkson's 'Because of You' and 'Addicted'...Beck's 'Girl,' Chantal Kreviazuk's 'Time' and Sia's 'Breathe Me' are other favorites. The Loafers have a full, rich, confident sound with some of the best soloists we've heard at the collegiate level."
MICKEY DALE (Embrace, on the Loafers' live performance of "Keeping"): "That is truly wonderful! I like her conducting style too! Thank you for that."
SIA FURLER (Zero 7, on the Loafers' live performance of "Breathe Me"): "I was touched."
