BY CHRISTINE KARSTEN ANCHOR LAUREN GORES New safety alerts have been added to what some say is the most widely prescribed drug — statins. The FDA says the drug used to lower high cholesterol may cause memory loss and confusion. So is this another safety precaution to protect a drug company or are users really at risk? KVUE reports... "The new labels will also warn doctors and patients that statins can cause an increase in blood sugar levels and increase the risk of type two diabetes." But those are not the only risks. MSNBC's Chief Science correspondent says some cholesterol drugs... "...combined with certain antibiotics and antiviral medications can increase the risk of muscle weakening."
The New York Times says — even with all these potential risks — some medical experts are saying there's not need to be scared away from statins. Deputy director for safety in the FDA's division told The Times... "'The value of statins in preventing heart disease has been clearly established... their benefit is indisputable, but they need to be taken with care and knowledge of their side effects.'" A KTVT reporter asks a doctor — what about patients using statins? Will they have to be treated for the symptoms with other medication? A CBS medical expert reports... "Well, thankfully with the memory impairments we know that if we take you off the statin that in three weeks that memory impairment goes completely away. So, hopefully we will not have to add another medication to help with the memory impairment." Statins have proven effective for people at high risk of heart attack or stroke. In fact — some joke they should be put in the water supply. But a blogger for Health Goes Strong says people can't forget that a drug is still a drug. "I'm hoping that the FDA's acknowledgement of statins' potential risks will temper that enthusiasm and send the message that drugs should only be taken when we know for certain that they offer a proven benefit that outweighs their risks." While the FDA added new labels, it also took one away. The HealthDay News reports... "The FDA also said it was removing from the label the need for routine monitoring of liver enzymes. The agency now recommends that these tests be done before patients start statin therapy, and as indicated thereafter."`

~~~~~~~~~ http://bigthink.com/ ~~~~~~~~~ John Horgan is no wild-eyed optimistic. True, his belief that the end of war is imminent was based on a moral conviction. But Horgan also points to a body of empirical evidence from scientific investigations of warfare. He writes in a new book called 'The End of War':
"Evidence of lethal group violence dates back not to the emergence of the Homo genus millions of years ago, nor to the emergence of our species hundreds of thousands of years ago, but to less than thirteen thousand years ago, shortly before the dawn of civilization."
In other words, war is a cultural, not a biological phenomenon.
