Nancy G. Brinker started Susan G. Komen for the Cure® in 1982 in Dallas, Texas in honor of a promise she made to her sister Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, Komen for the Cure is the worlds largest and most progressive grassroots network of survivors and activists working to end breast cancer forever. Komen for the Cure is 125 Affiliates strong, located in cities and communities across the U.S., Germany, Italy and Puerto Rico.
In 1998, Carolyn Montez Jorgensen, a breast cancer survivor and avid runner was browsing through a running magaizine when she noticed the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®. A woman on a mission with other hardworking volunteers brought the Komen Race to the Central Valley in 1999. About 800 individuals participated. The Race grew to 6850 in 2007. Since it's inception in 1999, The Central Valley Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has funded over $1.5 million in community-based grants for education, screening and treatment. $474,000 has been invested in the Komen National Award and Research Programs. Carolyn Jorgensen passed the torch to all of us in August 2007, two months before the Race.
