The only thing that bugs me is that the "top shield" would be referred to as the dorsal shield section, and the bottom would be the ventral shield section.

Simple answer to the question. One Heavy battleship can be overwhelmed by scores of smaller ships. Which is why escort ships are important. You need a force of ships to harass targets to leave them open to the larger ship's attacks.
