Christian Felix Weisse (1726 - 1804) was a German writer and educator. Weisse is one of the most important representatives of the Enlightenment and is considered the founder of German children's literature.
Mozart's few Lieder are representative of eighteenth-century song and its tendency toward sentimental melancholy. References to tears, graves and loneliness occur often in the poems, such as Abendempfindung an Laura, K. 523 and An die Einsamkeit, K. 391. Some are satirical, such as Die Verschweigung, K. 518, and one, Das Veilchen, K. 476, even brings to mind the eighteenth-century Ballad in its through-composed format.
Mozart did not seem to search hard and long for poems to set, which is probably why most of his song texts are mediocre. According to Mozart's "List of all my Works," Die Verschweigung , K. 518, was completed on May 20, 1787. The song, setting a text by C.F. Wiesse, was published in 1788 in Vienna. Most likely, the song was composed for use by one of Mozart's friends or fellow musicians after he had returned to Vienna from a successful visit to Prague. Mozart's main preoccupation during the middle of 1787 was Don Giovanni.
Weisse's poem concerns the tale of Damötas and Chloë. Damötas seeks Chloë in a meadow and near a stream, longing to see her and press his cheeks to her breast. If and when he finds her, he will be quite happy, and the narrator notes that on summer days Damötas often searches for Chloë.

Hello Candace, Thank You so very much for you wonderful comments on my video of my friend Tenor Gari Glaysher, he does indeed have a very masculine sound I think that comes from the fact that he is a Spinto Tenor. I have enjoyed watching your page too and have been waiting to see what new delights you have found for us to enjoy, it has been a little while now. All best wishes for a lovely day. Jo
Thank you for your messages!. Do you speak any of these foreign languages you are interested in? I do like Russian composers, but I do not know the language. --------Ellen
