Tom was incorrect with regard to Challenger being the first to lose an engine during a previous flight (4:40). Apollo 13 lost its center engine on its second stage.

@cowsrock94 The shuttle itself weighs somewhere around 700,000 pounds. Going from zero to 5 miles per second requires lots of energy for such weight. As far as pollution, the SRBs do generate a lot of silt but it is only for a short time. The shuttle main engines do not pollute at all, unless ...
