A Reader Of The Book "Mr. Was" By Pete Hautman Asked Me About The Book. This Was My Review/Answer Which I Will Share With You All:
"There are several themes affliated with the book. Jack comes from a dysfunctional family, an abusive father whose actions eventually lead to murder. And this was what he and his mother Betty had in common, since Scud had not been such a great father and husband to Betty and Andrea himself.
Then, there is the one line that is quite emphasized by Pincus Boggs and later on, Jack himself: what goes around comes around. It revolves around destiny, fate, time travel, and events from the past that set the future in motion. Or, the other way around, since Jack's future becomes his past.
This story is also filled with a mix of different feelings. Love and friendship, what it truly means. This is tested between the love triangle Jack-Andrea-Scud. Jack and Scud's friendship was tested when his affair with Andrea began.
There is yet a controversy, about Jack and Andrea's love, for Andrea was revealed to be Jack's grandmother. It questions us how love should be. But then again, it never said that after the war, they lived as husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, or simply lovers, It just said that they lived together in paradise in the end.
For me, I just wasn't bothered by it at all. A shock it is, to find that your girlfriend/affair from the past will be grandmother, but perhaps I see love differently than you do. But of course, when Andrea and Jack found out, they were already adults and mature enough to take that sort of information. But when Jack fell in love with her, she is not his grandmother yet, so there is nothing wrong at all, in that time. Had they had fallen in love in the same period of time, before Jack went through that door, it would've been different, because Jack would've been young and Andrea would've been an old woman.
