My twin sister and I told our Dad when we were little that we were going to be singers...when I was 18 she started dragging me to these auditions for local bands for moral support. I figured that if I was going to have to go with her, that I was going to learn to sing. So I hired a teacher. A very eccentric , very expensive, Italian Met Opera singer..he was something else....but he taught me to sing in the Bel Canto style. I took lessons for a year and a half and never sang anything but vowel sounds.....but he was very excited about my voice and I never forgot that. I met my husband and moved to California, went to college ( I traded pre-med for the title of mommy in a pretty short time) and stopped singing..... except when no one was around.

My sister (Kristi Starr) meanwhile got a guitar, learned four chords and began gigging in Charleston....seriously. She's now a fabulous rhythm guitarist and a great songwriter as well. You can find her links on my myspace and youtube pages.

About four years ago, my sister took me to the Bluegrass shop that used to be down the street and I fell in love. I went to the library and took out the only guitar instruction they had, it was a Dan Crary video..... popped it in the player and said....I want to do that. My sister lent me her old Seagull and my hubby bought me a Martin for my birthday that year.

I got a Steve Kauffman flatpicking Dvd set and taught myself to play. I discovered that I could follow tab well and could read music since I had been teaching the kids and myself a little piano, but couldn't play anything that wasn't written down.....so I stopped with all the tab reading.....duh.....and since my hubby is a pilot and was gone a lot I decided that I'd take my guitar down to the bluegrass shop for Friday night jams----just for something to do. Those guys let me pick and sing with them and I love them for it.... a special thanks to those of you who gently pushed me out there.....I wouldn't be doing this if it weren't for you. I still can't believe I've put all these videos up here.....

I've been influenced and taught by the fabulous bluegrass musicians I have come in contact with since.

Music is an emotional release for me and now a huge source of joy in my life. My children play with me in some of these videos. Halie has been playing mandolin about a year and a half. She has an incredible drive to tap her full potential. Emma is a totally self taught fiddler..... Matt and little Caroline are teaching themselves banjo and dobro. This is my homegrown bluegrass band in the making....
