The roots of the Kappa Chapter can be traced back to the Fall of 1993, when Brother Victor E. Franco Jr. attended a state wide convention for pre-professional minorities. After speaking about Latino disunity at Syracuse University during a workshop on diversity, he was approached by Brother Antonio Arocho (El Doctor, Theta Chapter) about the fraternity. In the weeks that followed, Franco was given information about how to setup an interest group at Syracuse University. Interested members were then recruited, and in December of that year the first informational was held.

In the Spring of 1994 a FIAT Club was founded which grew to include over many young men from a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds. That semester members of the FIAT Club worked to prove themselves worthy of a Phi Iota Alpha chapter at Syracuse University. After proving themselves, by conducting a variety of cultural, social, and community service events, they had earned a chance to start the process towards brotherhood.

In the Fall of 1994, a strong and determined group of young men began the process for admission into the fraternity. On January 15, 1995, this group of men entered the illustrious brotherhood of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity Inc. In the Spring of 1995, these men worked diligently building the infrastructure as well as the external image of this infant chapter.

During the Fall of 1995, the chapter pledged its first group of young men, "Los Caribeños." Brother Ruben D. Felipe mentored this group of young men as they progressed through the process for admissions. On November 11, 1995 the members of "Los Caribeños" completed thier process and crossed into the brotherhood of Phi Iota Alpha.

In December of 1995, the Kappa Colony was recognized by the National Black Panhellenic Council at SU and the Office of Greek Life, thus granting the young chapter of Syracuse University provisional recognition. Founding Brother, Richard M. Peterson set up the meetings involved in the chapter's recognition process.

In the Fall of 2009 "Los Versatiles" our latest line, consisting of 2 individuals, crossed into the realm. So far the Kappa Chapter has crossed 77 Phiotas in 15 years! There is no doubt that the success of this chapter experienced thus far will continue in the years ahead.
