Gellert Grindelwald stole the Elder Wand from wand-maker Gregorovich. Grindelwald himself was later defeated by Dumbeldore (his former friend) in one of the most teribble duels of wizards ever seen (it took place 1945...). and Dumbeldore was the new owner of the Elder Wand.
