The 2009 KAHNNES FILM FESTIVAL
The Kahnnes Film Festival at Lesly Kahn and Company, Actor Training in Los Angeles, California is the latest incarnation of what has long been known as The Birthday Present Tation. Held annually at the end of February and presented in lieu of gifts, The Birthday Present Tation is a series of performance pieces created by members of some of our acting classes. Each piece reflects some thing or things that the actors in the class have learned while studying with us.
Last year our actors were asked to produce three-minute shorts to kahnpete in The 2008 Kahndance Film Festival. The winner was Leslys Monday Night Class project, THE KAHNSTITUTE [http://www.youtube.com/user/KAHNDANCE.] This year, all Birthday Present Tation entries will again be short films.
While the Birthday Present Tation is a wonderful job perk for Ms. Kahn, it was actually not conceived with that purpose in mind. Indeed, it began simply as a breathtakingly manipulative way of compelling our actors to create their own kahntent, develop new skills, discover heretofore unknown passions, step out of their comfort zones, unearth a few latent abilities, get their mugs online, and have a freaking blast -- all at the same time. Past Birthday Present Tations have bred hyphenate careers in directing, editing, writing, songwriting, music and design. Our actors learn that they can DO it create stuff -- right now. They do not have to WAIT for someone to give them permission to live what they love to do. It is wildly empowering and incredibly thrilling to behold.
As our films are made by novices who are required to have no prior filmmaking experience whatsoever, we certainly do not expect them to win any awards. We are not trying to become a viral phenomenon. We dont care if our films totally bite. We just want our actors to MAKE them so that they begin to take control of their lives. (That disclaimer notwithstanding, should you wish to contact any Kahndance or Kahnnes Film Festival kahntestant in order to offer them oh, pretty much anything -- please feel free to kahntact us at 323.969.9900 or Lesly@LeslyKahn.com).
Following are the rules under which the 2009 Kahnnes Film Festival kahntestants toiled. Films that did not accommodate the requirements were disqualified from the kahnpetition.
1.The Birthday Present Tation must consist of a short film NOT TO EXCEED THREE MINUTES IN LENGTH. Longer films will be disqualified without even being VIEWED! Go ahead and make a full-length feature, but know that you will have to make a three minute cutting in order to participate in the kahntest.
2.Each film must reflect some thing or things that the actors in the class have learned while studying at LK&Co.
3.Everyone in the class must appear in the film.
4.Everyone in the class must have a speaking role. (Said speaking role must show each actor in a way that actor wants to be seen in the industry.)
5.Each film must have a beginning, middle, end and a reversal or surprise toward the end.
6.Each film must be edited, titled, have front and end credits (including how each class member of the class participated in the making of the film and his or her casting), and be scored, and all of this must be executed by members of the class only.
7.Including credits, each film may be no longer than 3:30 (three minutes and thirty seconds).
8.Each film must look professionally made, not like a buncha internet crapola.
9.No film may cost more than $100 to produce.
10.Only class members may participate in the making of the film. (No wives, children, teachers or Kate Winslets husband.) Classes are encouraged, however, to get advice and instruction from anyone they want.
11.No member of a class that has ever been paid to direct, DP, write, edit, or produce a film may direct, DP, write, edit or produce all or any part of the film for his or her class. No one in your class knows how to direct, DP, write, edit or produce? Yall get to learn how!
12.Each class' film is due the night of its film festival. Films not appearing in the festival for any reason at all -- on the designated night will be disqualified.
13.Each film is to be posted on the Kahndance channel at youtube.com by no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 27th. Thereafter, the judges will go online and commence their review of all the films! Films not posted or posted late will be disqualified.
14.Teachers and TA's may not participate in the films being made by the classes they teach or TA other than to appear in them if they are requested to do so, and only if they have the time and inclination. Other than that, they may advise a little bit, but that's it.
15.The films will be judged and prizes will be awarded but this year Lesly WONT BE IN CHARGE OF ANY OF THAT WHICH MEANS THERE IS A STRONG POSSIBILITY THAT THE RESULTS OF THE KAHNNES FILM FESTIVAL MIGHT BE KNOWN prior to 2010.
16.The judges are comprised of an independent panel.
