Son Jarocho
About Me:
The point of this monstrosity? About a year-and-a-half ago I fell in love with Son Jarocho, a form of Mexican folk music from the Jarocho region around Veracruz (go figure).
I live in London, and around here there aren't really any resources for learning to sing, dance, or play this vibrant, expressive musical form. All I knew was that I wanted to learn.
Before I was able to import a Jarana (a rhythm guitar used to lay down the harmonic base for Son Jarocho) I had to play on an 8-string Tenor Ukulele, which was the nearest thing to a Jarana I could find in London (Duke of Uke, just off Brick Lane, hell of a store...)
I learned the (very) little I've managed to pick up from watching Youtube clips of Jarana players like Tereso Vega and Gilberto Gutierrez (trust me, they're Gods to some people), listening to their music while squinting at the screen, watching their hands and attempting to decipher the dishearteningly complex strum patterns they employed.
As it stands, I know I have a long way to go, especially with my voice which at the moment isn't particularly well-suited to singing Son Jarocho songs, which seem to require that you shout at the top of your lungs in a way that will ensure the alienation of your next-door-neighbors.
But to hell with it. I'll keep uploading videos, and hopefully with time I'll see a bit of progress... (or I'll give up when I don't, I'm easy).
