About Me:

The Jolly Boys began playing in the early 1940s in Port Antonio, Jamaica, and to this day remain the most prominent exemplars and torchbearers of the Jamaican folk musical style of Mento. In the Port Antonio of this time, The Jolly Boys are famously remembered as the house band that regaled tourists at the Trident Hotel and performed early into the morning at the Hollywood style soirées thrown by Errol Flynn at his local estate.

From the late 1960s to 1980, The Jolly Boys continued to play the Port Antonio hotel circuit until the band was invited to take a residency in Portland, Maine, USA. This interest in Mento was probably fostered by the original recordings of Harry Belafonte, who had the best selling Caribbean album of all time up to that date.

In the late 80s, Jules Shear discovered the band during a visit to the Trident Hotel and returned to produce their debut album on Rykodisc that bringing a renewed interest in the band and their music outside of Jamaica. The band released a series of well known albums from 1989 to 1997 and would tour the world with their most popular lineup to date.

Moving into the 21st century, The Jolly Boys would continue to enthrall audiences in hotels around Port Antonio and occasional shows in Kingston. By 2005, the group needed fresh blood and in stepped the relatively sprite, at 68 years old, former limbo dancing, hand-walking, and fire eating Albert Minott who instantly added a refreshed vigor to the group. In prophetic fashion for the band itself, one of Alberts special performances has been what he describes as The Duppy (Jamaican for ghost) Ska in which a dancer rises from the dead to wow the audience.

The Jolly Boys, still here over sixty years later in 2010, are again reincarnated for yet another generation. They are not only a historical link to Jamaicas musical heritage, but also a vital and living present embodiment of the timeless music of Mento.
