The Fifth Amendment protects you against self-incrimination BUT it's not enough to HAVE the right; you must INVOKE it. You have the right to have a lawyer present during your interview.
"I have nothing to say."
"I want to invoke my right to stay silent."
"I wont speak without my lawyer."
These are good examples of things to tell a police officer. However, be mindful of the real-world consequences of being abrasive or rude to a police officer. Your tone and demeanor should not come off as defiant to police authority. You can be assertive but remain polite and still exercise your Fifth Amendment right.

After helping with West Acres medical team, and then distributing Biosand water filters, Pastor Don Skow from Hollister Christian Fellowship (Hollister, CA) arrived and had lots of work to do with Pastor Josuè Joassaint. There wasn't much else I could do, so I began the journey home.
My new Dominican friends who had traveled from Bonao, Dominican Republic to help the West Acres team, insisted I stop by to see them on the way home. In need of some good rest and relaxation, and thinking we might be able to solidify friendships, I agreed.
The bus left Port-au-Prince about an hour late. The ride was longer -- much longer than stated. And I had to sleep one night at the Caribeno hotel in Santo Domingo. The hot water was broken the night I was there.
