About Me:

I briefly returned to playing piano in 2001 after a long absence because of a serious finger injury and now, because of yet another finger injury, am now permanently MIA from the piano. I am presently working on my Second Piano Concerto. The first and second movements are finished. I hope to premiere the entire concerto here on YouTube in spring of 2012. The First Concerto is available for listening now. A word about the 1st movement: there are two version: one with a fast ending that is in the form of a one-movement concert-piece, and the original one. The latter has a quiet serene ending, whereas the concert-piece has a fast brilliant one which could be played independent of the other two movements.
Country:
United States
Interests:
I've been forced to retire from playing due to a second finger injury, not that I had any real talent to begin with---I was just mediocre at best, as my videos will attest. I decided to turn to composing because I wanted to see what it felt like to write a piano concerto, seeing as how I couldn't play 'em I might as well try to write 'em.
Movies:
The Second Concerto is bigger in scope than the First. Most of the Second is already mapped out in my mind. It's just a matter now of being able to get the sounds I hear in my head onto manuscript---a difficult task as this is the first serious large-scale orchestral composing I have ever done in my life.

Thank to you and your wife for the compliments! I did the animation myself. It's fairly simple with the right tools to be honest. I think the video's I've uploaded from this animated serie are a bit to 'suggestive' for children, but I could consider making a children's serie with new material. Great idea!

>>>>>are you Mr. Keulen?

No, my name is Gijs. I host the channel. You can find my own compositions under compositions by Gijs.

I think you shouldn't abbandon your second piano concerto at all. To appreciate it you have to listen 'thru' the midi. So maybe that's where the dislike came from. It's good work, keep it up.

>>>>Do you have any tips for studying Rachmaninoff?

If by studying you mean to one day play him, I can only say that you need a very advanced technique for 99% of everything he wrote. There are a few scattered shorter pieces he wrote that someone with medium technique could tackle, but Rach's style of writing was different from just about everyone else's. As THE greatest pianist of the 20th century (IMHO) he developed an idiom all his own. His harmonies and multiple voicings are very complex and it takes a pianist of top caliber to properly interpret his pieces.
