I think DeFalco is so fabulous! The way he tore into Schettino - not to mention all the efforts of the other recuers and people that have been trying to find those still missing restores your faith in humanity.

Sutherland's Eflat at the end of the "si vendetta" is arguably on of the best that she ever recorded! OMG! I don't give a hoot about her diction - that voice is beyond beautiful - it's a gift from above! And anyone who gets hung up on her diction really loses the whole idea of her version of beau...

This is just overwhelming!

The early Tebaldi - particularly in this repertoire - will remain forever "intoccabile" ... especially that final note! Perfection!!!!!!

And you can't say that about any of the current crop of tenors that we have today! Kraus was one of a good number of tenors in the 50's-60s'-70's - such as Bergonzi, Corelli and Gedda - they went on for decades knowing their art and their repertoire. We were so blessed to know ...

I just LOVE DeFalco - I agree with RedOcktober! The absolute DISGUST in the tone of DeFalco's voice as he is confronted by Schettino's cowardice is uplifting.

First of all,both Netrebko and Meade are qualified and dignified to sing/interpret this role.

IMHO - Meade's trills are superior to Netrebko's - although they both have a long way to go to equal trills of either Callas or Sutherland ....

What she does not do in "sovra'acuti" she more than makes up for in that tone and luscious sound. She always remains a favorite!

She packs so much emotion and angst into her agility and fioritura passages that it is unbelievable. It makes you want to personally take Pollione's head and knock him into a wall!

What year is this from?? I absolutely LOVE Angeles Gulin. She was a powerhouse soprano who was terribly overlooked by the major houses until her health was so poor that she could not have performed up to her standard.

Me, too blktenor! "Obscure" Donizetti and early Verdi are such a great new world! If you haven't heard these, try Verdi's Il Corsaro and Stiffelio - FABULOUS - and there are recordings of Angeles Gulin in both of these.

I agree - This is clearly the 64 EMI recording with Gabriella Tucci as Leonora ...but the woman lip-synching here doesn't look like the real Garbiella Tucci (at least at the time of this taping). Doesn't matter ...the singing is so superb ...who cares! We'll never have another ...

Two greatly under-rated and under-recorded artists! And Lucine Amara was one of the BEST Nedda's EVER! Her's was such a beautifully focused voice -

Franco was Manrico and Manrico was Franco! He was the first one I ever saw in this role back at the Met in the '60s - and NO ONE has ever come close since then!

Devia is always wonderful - but sorry this can't compare to the Gencer/Verrett live performance of Maria Stuarda in Florence in 1967 especially this scene. That remains the ultimate!

This was excellent - but the Callas 1952 performance still is the one that knocks my socks off - but also very much spectacular is the Detekom recording. Her performance of this in 1973 in Bregenz is phenomenal!
