The Hollies cover arrangement is great (even though they didn't bother to get the lyrics right) , but really doesn't come close to the power and mystery of the original.

I was at this show...the band sounded great and was very well received. They really outclassed (and outplayed) the other acts on the bill (John Kay and Steppenwolf opened, Jefferson Starship headlined)

But wow...I must disagree with your assessment of it. This performance far too ragged to suggest that it comes anywhere near the original (which is a true gem). Between Gary brainfarting on the lyrics, and poor Christine singing s...

Amusing? Certainly not. Not at all.

But if one's time is up, there's something cosmically satisfying to the soul of a performer to be able die "with their boots on" (to borrow the old cowboy saying). Doing comedy, no less.

This is the best visual quality I've ever seen for this clip...unfortunately the original audio from the film (where they are actually performing the song live) has been replaced here.

Still a great song though.

Great animation, but that's probably the lamest Popeye impression I've ever heard.

There was a studio recorded version of CONQUISTADOR on Procol's debut album in 1967.

The 1971 live version blows it away, as does this performance.
