Wednesday, February 8th is Tu B'Shevat which is one of the four Jewish New Years. On Tu B'Shevat (literally the 15th of the month of Shevat) we celebrate the New Year for Trees and it is also thought to mark the beginning of Spring. In Israel, they welcome the beginning of Spring on the blossoming of the almond tree. In Israel this tree is always the first to blossom. Even though it still feels like Winter, this tree gives us hope that Spring is on its way. Like how many of us have woes and worries and we think we're never going to escape our problems. Its Winter all the time. But then, right in the middle of winter, the almond blossoms to remind us that Spring is coming. There will be a bright morning. There is hope. We should not despair. Spring is coming.
Happy Tu B'Shevat to you all!

With the Superbowl less than 2 weeks away, Rabbi Ephraim Buchwald, Director of Jewish Treats' parent organization the National Jewish Outreach Program, discusses the close endings of the recent NFL playoff games and emphasizes what a difference a couple of yards or a couple of seconds can make in terms of our destinies. We don't have to be pro athletes to have similar experiences. If you're walking in the street and are missed by a speeding car by a couple inches, you'll know the feeling too. Our whole lives can sometimes be turned into turmoil. But on the other hand we also have good news too. So let's not take anything for granted. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords who resigned from Congress this week, survived a gunshot wound that, if it were a millimeter away, would have killed her. In our prayers we say, "God renews with His goodness the acts of creation." Let's hope that everybody will be blessed with goodness and good news.

If they don't, what does "Mazel Tov" actually mean? Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of Jewish Treats' partner organization the National Jewish Outreach Program, explains to us the origins of the phrase, and they may surprise you. Watch this video to learn more.
