Barry Lyndon is absolutely without a doubt the best film ever made, period, with the possible exception of everything else Kubrick made. Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, and Howard Hawkes all suck compared to Kubrick! Contemporary filmmakers I like are the guys who seem like they're basically trying to be Kubrick. Paul Thomas Anderson's recent work, Darren Aronofsky, Quentin Tarantino (even though he is kind of more like Sergio Leone, who wishes he was half the director that Kubrick was).
