The death of the Confederacy marked the death of the Jeffersonian Republican principles so intertwined with Southern culture. The Republican Party replaced the Whig Party in the two party system and went on to defeat the Democratic Republican Party in the 1860 Presidential elections. The Republican Party established itself as the Federalist Party of its day and instituted policies that can be considered a continuation of Hamilton's long forgotten American System. Secession was the only way to protect Jeffersonian Libertarianism from the very influential federalist north.
