About this user
Skip Bolen is a southern photographer of musicians, architecture, lifestyle and the culture of New Orleans and Southern United States. Heralded mostly for his profound black and white photography of both famed and unknown jazz musicians as well as other genres on and off stage, Skip Bolen's natural-light images are infused with a spontaneous intensity, a raw energy and collaborative spirit of the live performance. He remains forever in pursuit of impromptu moments that display the heart and soul of what is Jazz, often capturing the intense concentration and sheer joy of the extemporaneous collaborative effort in the facial expressions of jazz musicians. While known primarily for his jazz photography, he is also known for his nostalgic take on the depth, emotions and richness of historic architectural imagery, of classic vintage signs, landmarks and notable scenes in New York, Hollywood and his hometown of New Orleans. Other works include documenting the disappearing historic landscape of water towers, telephone poles, and architecture taken primarily at dusk and at night with available light. His photographs are in public and private collections, among them the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans and the Louisiana State Museum. Skip Bolen is also a member of IATSE Local 600 (International Cinematographers Guild) and is a still photographer in the motion picture and television industry. He is also a member of The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences.
