Recently it's been revealed that Stephen Harper might set up his own carbon tax: http://bit.ly/7h6JDx

While this is one of the greatest flip-flops in Canadian history it is a bitter sweet victory for Canadians. In 2008 Stephen Harper demonized carbon taxes like the one put forward by the Liberal Party. Harper also used his cynical rhetoric on this issue to politically assassinate Stéphane Dion and it resulted in Canada sending a Conservative government to the Copenhagen climate change summit.

This was the same summit where pundits branded Canada a fossil failure for our lack of an effective environmental regime and for shunning tools like a carbon tax. One can only imagine the warm international reception we would have received had Canada elected a Liberal Party whose innovative Green Shift policy was going lead us into the future. Alas, things did not turn out this way...

Climate change is an important issue that should not be marred by partisan politics. This is the biggest challenge of our time and unless all political parties can learn to work together on this we will be defeated by the consequences.

With that being said Im glad even a renowned climate change denier like Stephen Harper is rethinking his position on carbon taxes. While incredibly hypocritical this is still a good outcome for Canada and Im looking forward to the day we put a price on carbon!
