Lemon v. Kurtzman (1971):
For a law to be considered constitutional under the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, the law must have a legitimate secular purpose, must not have the primary effect of either advancing or inhibiting religion, and must not result in an excessive entanglement of government and religion.
Lawrence v. Texas (2003):
Laws declaring homosexual intercourse as illegal sodomy violated the privacy and liberty of adults to engage in private intimate conduct under the 14th amendment.
Loving v. Virginia (1967):
Anti-miscegenation laws violate Due Process and Equal Protection of the laws. "...To deny this fundamental freedom [Marriage] on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes (and surely sexual orientation as well), classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State's citizens of liberty without due process of."
Griswold v. Connecticut (1965):
A Connecticut law criminalizing the use of contraceptives violated the right to marital privacy, thereby rendering any "state interest" in marriage (such as reproduction) unconstitutional, which disposes of the ability to have children as a criterion for marriage.
Engel v. Vitale(1962):
Government-directed prayer in public schools, even if it is denominationally neutral and non-mandatory, violates the Establishment Clause of the 1st Amendment to the Constitution (as does recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance due to the words "one, nation, under God," as has been ruled by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. This decision was reversed on procedural grounds by the Supreme Court due to a technicality, and the constitutional question was dismissed. This fact does not change the unconstitutionality of the Pledge of Allegiance, and a new lawsuit has been filed that reflects the correction of the technicality. It has been given a re-hearing by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and awaits judgment. "In God We Trust" is also being challenged, and is currently awaiting judgment by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.)
