In these modern times schoolboys tend to try to sing rap like Eminem, but one Westridge Elementary pupil, 14 year-old, Jared Freiburg, is attracting worldwide attention by playing in the old boogie-woogie piano style. Internet videos of Jared pounding out old rock'n'roll tunes on the piano have been praised by viewers from as far away as Japan and Russia.

Jared has no time for modern rap music and prefers the style that made his idol Jerry Lee Lewis famous more than fifty years ago. Back then Jerry Lee had million sellers with "Great Balls of Fire and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On" back in 1957, long before Jared or his parents were even born.

Jared comes from a musical family and he credits both his late grandfathers for getting him into the music of the fifties. They would play guitar and sing Johnny Cash tunes and Jared joined in -- he started playing piano when he was just six years old and he hasn't stopped since.

Rock'n'roll music even gets into his school work. At a Chorus Class two years ago Jared was picked to play the piano accompaniment for "Great Balls of Fire". Soon after that he teamed up with two friends -- drummer Matt Yeates and guitarist Eric Jessen and their highly acclaimed initial video was made in a school gymnasium.

Then Jared, Matt and Eric entered the Bill Riley talent show at the Iowa State Fair. They made it through to the semi-final and earned themselves a sizeable cheque. A video of this performance has been reissued on Japanese and Korean websites and Jared and his friends are causing a lot of interest over there where boogie-woogie piano is very popular.

Jared says, "I practice for hours each day. I love the way Jerry lee Lewis plays those sweeping glissandos. 'I've Got the Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu' isn't just the title of a song that I sing -- I've really caught the fever -- it's like a disease -- now I can't stop singing and playing the piano."

I like to play in church too but have to take care not to rock the tempo up too much. Great tunes like 'When the Saints Go Marching' and 'I'll Fly Away" are full of joy and should be played with real gusto and real feeling. My folks love to watch me playing and singing hymns. My late Grandfather played really good guitar and piano too so I guess that my music came from my grandfather due to the fact that neither of my parents are musical."

Since appearing in the talent contest Jared has had enquiries from people telling him to try going on Nationwide televised talent shows and to keep pursuing the career. In the meantime Jared says he loves playing for his Grandma and her "oldie" friends -- "They really like my style of music as it reminds them of when they were young."

Jared has plenty of talent and certainly doesn't lack ambition. His idol, Jerry Lee Lewis's piano playing was once likened to a boy playing on metal railings with a stick but that pounding piano style has kept Jerry as an international star for over 50 years.

There seems to be little doubt that Jared is destined for a career in show business, he says, "I want to rock the world and shock the world just like Jerry did when he started out. I'm taking rock'n'roll out of the fifties and bringing it up to date and into the 21st Century. Point me at a piano and I guarantee we will soon have a Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On."
