Council Member James Sanders Jr. is in his eighth year representing Council District 31, which is composed of Laurelton, Springfield Gardens, Edgemere, Bayswater, Arverne, Rosedale, and most of the Rockaways. He is a proven fighter for his constituents and a tireless community organizer.

Sanders was born (literally) in the Hammels Houses in the Rockaways. He graduated from Far Rockaway High in 75. At 18, he volunteered for service with the Marine Corps, and served three years in the infantry. After his tour of duty, he began pursuing his Bachelors, graduating from Brooklyn College in 84. Driven to action by the rising tide of the mid-80s crack epidemic, Sanders commitment to serve led to a focus on the youth after his graduation. This naturally propelled him to run for a seat on School Board 27. Sanders spent 10 years there, becoming the first black president of that organization. His work began a slow and steady increase in achievement levels that has continued to this day.

Since then, Sanders has taken his role as a community organizer into the City Council, and has led the battle against some of the worst influences on our community, such as: the hot-sheet motel; the strip club in Rosedale; gun violence; and the Federal Prison. He has also been a pioneer in the struggle with predatory lenders, fighting the financial industrys theft of our homes since his first year in office. In 2002, Sanders was the prime sponsor of the strongest anti-predatory lending law in the nation.

After his election, Sanders was voted the first African-American Chair of the Economic Development Committee. As Chair, Sanders was in charge of a disparity study that is the basis upon which NYC reinstated affirmative action in procurement. Sanders had oversight of the Economic Development Corporation, and the Department of Small Business Services.

In early 2007, before the Iowa caucus, Sanders endorsed Barack Obama for President, becoming the only elected official in Queens to do so. He was a prominent leader in Obamas primary fight in New York, and his leadership was essential to Obamas victory in Southeast Queens. He became an Obama delegate and represented the 6th Congressional District at the Denver Democratic National Convention. Afterward, he spent weeks in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and South Carolina working for Obamas campaign to ensure his victory.

Sanders is currently Chair of the Veterans Affairs committee, and is a member of the Juvenile Justice, Womens Issues, Technology and Government, and the Community Development Committees.
