Leonard Cohen "Everybody Knows", Montréal Jazz Festival
The CBC entitled this special "Everybody Knows" which was an event which took place during "Le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal", 2008.
As far as I know, this was an impromptu event, hastily organized when it was discovered that Mr. Cohen happened to be in Montréal (an unusual event to be sure!). Of course, as is proper, this is thrown up on national television in prime time on Sunday evening (in Canada that's the highest TV viewing hour of the week).
So, a heartfelt "thank you" from me to the CBC.
In any case, the collection here are the segments of the show which I enjoyed personally. There were a few I did not and have excluded them from the list... my apologies to those artists. Just not my style.
However, I would have included any clip with Adam Cohen (Leonard's son) in this list even if I didn't like them. But as it turns out, I did like Adam's performances very much. They were honest and enjoyable tributes to his great father.
You will notice that every other performer in this event happens to be an "unknown". It would not surprise me one bit if Mr. Cohen insisted on that specifically. He is a very generous man and I believe that if he felt he could use his prestige to raise awareness about newcomers, and so help them get a head-start in the business, he most certainly would.
Important cocktail party Cohen trivia (zero chance of failure):
==============================<wbr>================
1971, Cohen's music was used in the soundtrack to Robert Altman's film McCabe & Mrs. Miller. Cohen had been in Nashville when Altman phoned to ask permission to use some tracks off Songs of Leonard Cohen. Coincidentally, earlier that same day, Cohen had viewed Altman's film, Brewster McCloud, in a Nashville theater. He hadn't paid attention to the credits, though; when Altman asked permission to use Cohen's songs in his new film, Cohen asked him who, exactly, he was. Altman mentioned MASH, but Cohen had never heard of it. Altman then told him of the lesser-known Brewster McCloud. Cohen, likely astonished, replied, "Listen, I just came out of the theater. I saw it twice; you can have anything of mine you want!"

Leonard Cohen : NFBC Documentary (pro/epi-log Cohen music)
This is an old documentary about the then-novelist and poet Leonard Cohen. At this time he was not a singer or song writer, so the songs at the head and tail of this documentary were actually produced several years later. These song's lyrics however, had already been written as most of Mr. Cohen's song's lyrics were at that time; poetry eventually to be set to music.
As The Mist Leaves No Scar:
======================
As the mist leaves no scar
On the dark green hill,
So my body leaves no scar
On you, nor ever will.
When wind and hawk encounter
What remains to keep?
So you and I encounter
Then turn, then fall to sleep.
As many nights endure
Without a moon or star,
So will we endure
When one is gone and far.

Becomes the song: "True Love Leaves No Traces"

Thus bring us the Leonard Cohen you know; the man, his poems hidden behind catchy tunes.
Leonard Cohen : NFBC Documentary (no music)
This is an old documentary about the then-novelist and poet Leonard Cohen, long before he became famous as a singer song-writer.
Tanya Stephens : "Stripped Down" - A JTV Raggamentary!
As legend would have it, this show was broadcast on Jamaican Television some time after Jan 21st 2006, sponsored by "Bonita Jamaica": www.BonitaJamaica.com, which is probably a travel agency given their splash screen (which, I'm sorry to say, had to be erased).
The broadcast also includes exactly one single frame (ie. 1/30th of a second) of information about the performances given here. That single frame (in case you missed it) reads as follows:
-------------------
"On January 21st, 2006, at the New York City's famed Knitting Factory, [Tanya?] Stephens unveiled songs from her new album "Rebelution" to a celeot [sic] group of music critics and media. We are very proud to make this very special "Stripped Down" acoustic performance available to Tanya's most important critics... her fans.
Welcome to the Rebelution!"
-------------------
Well, I am also very proud to bring this very special "Stripped Down" performance (actually called "Unplugged"; a DVD included with the CD purchase of Rebelution) to you! Her *new* fans!
This show includes full acoustic versions of "I am Woman", "Can't Breathe", "To The Rescue", "It's a Pity" and "Damn You", as well as a few out-takes from her recording studio of a song who's title I am not familiar with.
The show also includes a few brief interviews with some of her producers, namely "Barry O'Hare" and "Andrew Henton".
Note: I've also added an extra *bonus track* "Do You Still Care" (also from the "Unplugged" DVD).
Welcome to the uhh... "not-so-quiet" Rebelution!
